If the Indian Wedding were a person.

Hi. This is me. Your parents and everyone in your family have been asking about me since you graduated from college. Oh come on! Don’t pretend like you don’t recognize me.

I am the Indian marriage! More importantly, I am your wedding! And I am here with a bang. Nice to finally meet you.

I am one of your most important milestones. I make a shift in your life. I teach you how to be an adult and take responsibility. I also lead you to your partner- and the corresponding highs and lows in your new life as a wedded person.

I teach you the value of long term relationships. I bring you the joys of having your own kids. Yes raising them can be tough, but trust me you won’t regret it later. I enlarge your circle quite a bit. Your spouse’s friends and family are also now your own. And vice versa.

I cannot guarantee a smooth ride through life. Because it is unpredictable. There will be joys and there will be lows. But you know what? It’s going to turn out all okay.

Whether I am a love or arranged match, it hardly matters after a point. It takes commitment and respect from both sides to keep me going. Nurturing me will become a part of you. And you will remember this day for the rest of your life wistfully.

The elation of having a significant other is not describable. To be able to share your innermost fears, joys, sorrows, strengths and weaknesses- that is something else. To have someone to take care of you when you are low, to have a companion through thick and thin.

But hey, all this is in future. Let’s cut to the present. Did you know I drive a major part of our economy just be existing! Didn’t get it? Let me explain.

Think of the countless people who are directly or indirectly employed because of me; because of my importance. Image consultants, marriage bureaus, matrimonial websites, dieticians and nutritionists, gym trainers, dress designers, tailors, cloth retailers, wedding planners, venue decorators, hotels and locations for destination weddings, caterers, wardrobe stylists, make up artists, hairstylists, wedding card manufacturers and retailers, performance artists, wedding and pre-wedding photographers and videographers, entertainers, mehendi artists, jewellery retailers.. Gah! The list is endless. Imagine the number of people whose living depends on me. I am humbled to be able to do that for them!

The Indian Wedding is a big deal. And rightly so! Those seven feras change your life and make you grow as a person. Don’t worry and hold tight baby. We have a long beautiful journey ahead. 😊
