Watching “Desperate Housewives” as a housewife.

There is an ample amount of content available across genres for viewers. With live streaming and fast downloads, the television viewing experience has been enhanced greatly. It is indeed an awesome time to be alive if you love binge watching shows and demand fresh content suited to your individual taste.

There are comedies, dramas, crime thrillers, horror, dramedies, and other theme based entertainment options- a large choice for the average viewer. So much so that Netflix is often a joke. Because it takes forever to even decide what to watch from the wide selection available.

I happened to watch the hit TV show ‘Desperate Housewives’ right after college. This was before the Amazon Prime and Netflix era in India. It aired on the TV and had just the right amount of comedy, storyline, interesting plots and pace that matched my interest. And I lapped it up. Eight seasons were watched back to back. Carefully recorded and viewed at a convenient time.

I recently began to watch this show again on a streaming service. And surprisingly, I still adore the show and its characters. Cuz it kinda gives me life lessons. On relationships, friendships and it also makes me laugh. Here are six reasons why DH will always be my go-to show for comfort TV-

The cast: The casting for each character has been meticulously perfect to say the least. Every actor exudes the charm required for the role. And this includes the side actors who appear for some episodes in any season.

The plots: Each of the eight seasons had an element of suspense and drama centred around the key characters along with new entrants to the cast. Every season a new storyline and plot which was enthralling and intriguing to say the least.

The laughs: Quirks and situational comedy is at the heart of the characters’ life on the show. The relationships depicted may be a tad unrealistic, but the content scores high on entertainment value for the average viewer.

The lessons: Every season of DH follows the lives of the four key characters of the show- Bree VanDeKamp, Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo and Gabrielle Solis. How they deal with everyday problems in friendships, relationships, family and more. The EQ content on the show is high as it is a fictional drama at the centre of its theme. It teaches that life is indeed not a bed of roses. There could be hardship, trauma, financial insecurity, betrayal, loss and even death. Getting back up is what matters in the end.

Wisteria Lane: Set in the fictional town of Fairview, the key characters residing on a beautiful street called Wisteria Lane. A pristine set and soothing to the eyes, with a beautiful depiction of idillyic American suburbia, always makes my day.

Lynette Scavo: This character deserves special mention. She has always been my favorite character on the show, wonderfully portrayed by Felicity Huffman. Arguably the strongest, wittiest and funniest character on the show, Lynette has been an inspiration in my adolescent years. And she continues to amaze me into adulthood.
